The world's most expensive tomato is now ripening on our kitchen counter. Plant = $8, extra soil $3, plant food $4 = $15 for one small tomato. J plucked it this morning because it wasn't getting any bigger and the plant itself isn't doing very well despite our strenuous efforts. At first it seemed brown and dry, so we gave it more water, then we added plant food, then it looked like it was getting too much water. Besides this one pretty green striped tomato, there are no other signs the plant will bear fruit, and all the leaves are brown and shriveled up. I think next year we'll ditch the heirloom concept (German Striped Heirloom) and go with a modern, genetically-modified tomato plant, or another type altogether. It was fun while it lasted, but J thinks its time to put the poor thing out of its misery. Maybe if I leave it in the alley someone will rescue it?
