Labor Day Weekend

  • Sep. 3rd, 2007 at 8:32 PM
I'm sad that the 3-day weekend is over, but it was great while it lasted. The weather was perfect - sunny, warm, not very humid. On Saturday, we went downtown, walked around the Mall area, just enjoying the sunshine. I took a few pictures of the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, but it was closed so we didn't get to see the interior. We did some shopping, then had dinner at Teaism.

We took a day trip to Annapolis on Sunday, figuring the traffic wouldn't be too bad. It wasn't, we parked in a garage there, and walked around for hours. Entering the grounds of the US Naval Academy was a breeze; all we had to do was show our drivers licenses, no lines, no bag search, no metal detectors. They actually make visitors feel welcome there, unlike so many local institutions after 9/11. It seems each agency or museum tries to out-do the other in elaborate security precautions. We walked all around the waterfront perimeter of the USNA, and sat out on some rocks for awhile, just soaking up the sun and watching boats going by.

Then, we exited the campus and sat down by the Annapolis City Dock for awhile. It's amazing how many people can afford boats and yachts - the harbor was wall-to-wall fiberglass with rare wooden boats catching my eye from time to time. Then, we went to a street arts festival up by the state house before heading back to DC. There was no traffic on the way home, and the Mazda does well on the open road, cruising at an effortless 80 MPH at around 3,000 RPMs. With the hatchback storage area, sunroof and cruise control, it's a great little long-distance touring car.

Today we went out to brunch at The Heights with G, and we sat outside on their patio. It was very relaxing, and nice to have some company with everyone out of town seemingly. Actually, The Heights was packed, so maybe a lot of our neighbors were around. After brunch we walked down to Meridian Hill Park and took in the views, and I took some photos of the fountains and ducks. Then, it was back to reality, as we attended to food shopping and laundry. Back to work tomorrow - boooo!
