Mr T in DC
Today, there was a guy selling baby turtles on the street, in front of the Samuel Kelsey apartments on 14th Street NW in Columbia Heights. The poor creatures were in little plastic containers, the kind you'd find in a pet store for bringing fish home, with nothing but a few drops of water. The vendor didn't have a table or anything, just a pile of baby turtle containers on the hot, dirty sidewalk. Some kids from the neighborhood were buying them, and lord knows what kind of short and miserable lives these poor turtles will have.

Where did this guy get the turtles? Did he raid a wildlife sanctuary, or plunder Rock Creek Park? Were  they a rare species, smuggled into the country? Does he breed them in his home? I'm guessing he didn't have proper permits and whatnot.

As I walked by, I briefly thought about buying all of them, and setting them free, or bringing them to my friend who works at the zoo and who could likely assist in rescuing them. G, if you're reading, what do you advise? Then I thought I should just call the police, but decided otherwise when I imagined the conversation with the 911 dispatcher. By the time I thought to call the DC Humane Society, it was too late - the turtle seller had gone. If he comes back tomorrow, I'll try the humane society and see what they recommend.

Turtles
Most likely these turtles can NOT and should not be released into the wild. They may have disease that local wild turtle populations are not immune to, or depending on the species, could damage the ecosystem they are introduced to.

I hate when people are so ignorant and sell living things like this to make a buck.

Thanks for the concern!

Baby Turtles
Very sad, I feel your concern. Imagine all those terrible markets in Asia selling animals by the thousands-that's the real tragedy.

re: baby turtles for sale
Next time, call animal control and/or health department. It's illegal in all 50 states and DC to sell a turtle under 4". Likely you were seeing hatchling red-eared sliders, which are bred in huge "turtle farms" in southern states. Sliders can grow to be 6-12", and live 20+ years with proper care - there are hundreds of them in our area needing new homes, because most people don't realize they need a 55 or 75 gallon aqaurium for ONE adult slider. The illegal sale of baby sliders is a huge problem in this country - red-eared sliders are NOT native to the east coast, but so many have been dumped here, we have ferals competing with our native turtles. There's also the risk of salmonella from a stressed-out reptile, especially around children and the elderly.

unwanted turtles
Somehow I have completely forgotten to ask zoo staff what they recommend (I WILL remember tomorrow) but I can tell you that I have gotten a depressing number of inquiries from the public, asking if the zoo can take their unwanted turtle/snake/bird off their hands. I tell them all, in so many words, that they have been wretched to acquire this kind of animal, that instead their pets should be adopted domesticated animals, bred for human companionship over hundreds or thousands of years. And no, the zoo cannot take their unwanted animal.

Re: www.TurtleSale.com
Turtlesale.com illegally sells baby turtles, too, and they were recently charged with a federal Lacy Act violation in Operation Shellshock with the state NY wildlife agency. Check around for complaints against them, and you'll find many. Check the "good, bad, and ugly" section at www.turtleforum.com

WTF
This is wild. I wonder where he gets them from or who buys them for that matter. I had one when I was little and it stunk! I cant imagine having one for very long in a one bedroom condo.

Re: WTF
The baby sliders usually come from large turtle "farms" in Florida and Louisiana. You can HAVE a turtle under 4" in most places (so you're OK if your turtles lay eggs and they hatch), but you can't SELL a turtle as a pet in any of the 50 states. If you want to learn more, read this article http://www.metropets.org/Newsroom/articles/slider.php

They can be interesting pets IF you have the space for one and the proper equipment - that's the problem, most people don't have the right equipment for them. They need filters, basking spots, heat lights, and so on. An adult female slider needs at least a 75 gallon tank. There are dozens for adoption in our area, try www.petfinder.com

Iraised many rescued turtles incl. snappers and released them. One became famous retrieving a discarded baby from Mt.Vernon Country Club's lake in 2002.(See Washington Post) He probably was just killed by Tony Cline and Ray Williams of Knerr Tyre not long ago, their pictures can be found by search:"mount vernon snapping turtle". Good to know that this fantastic former pet sacrificed himself for starving folks.
