Kudos to Southwest Airlines

Mr T in DC
Before I forget, here's a little shout-out to Southwest Airlines. While I'm normally unimpressed by their Lord of the Flies boarding process, garish color scheme, and casual flight attendant uniforms, I had a positive experience on my flight home from Long Island last Sunday. As I got settled in my seat and the plane filled up, I felt something strange down by my feet. They felt glued to the floor! When I peered down, I saw what looked like a mixture of gum and melted candy on the carpet, along with scattered crayons and markers. Obviously, a child had the seat before me and made a huge mess. Eeew. A sympathetic passenger gave me a page from his newspaper to try to clean up the mess with, but it was making it even worse.

One of the flight attendants noticed I was having some difficulties, and brought me several packets of pre-moistened towelettes to clean up my shoes and hands. Then, she got down on her hands and knees with a rag and bottle of Windex, and cleaned up the mess as best she could under the circumstances. She did a great job and it made the rest of the flight more comfortable and probably kept the sticky mass from ending up on the new car's floormats. Later, she came by and offered a free drink, which I politely declined. She didn't have to do that, I would have been happy if she just handed me a paper towel or something.

While disembarking the plane at the end of the flight, I meant to get her name and call Southwest to leave a commendation, but she was busy assisting a handicapped passenger and I didn't want to disturb her. In the unlikely event anyone from Southwest is reading, the flight was no. 799 from Islip to BWI, 12:10 PM, Sunday 6/17 and the flight attendant was a young (20-30?) blond woman. I appreciated the first class service at a discount price.

SW Airlines's over-talented, under appreciated flight staff
MrT- When I was living in DC, I flew a noteworthy leg on SW from Las Vegas to BWI. At first I noticed the casual flight attendants but thought no big deal. One of the younger female ones started doing schtick during the pre-flight announcements though, and she was very funny. She got us the info we needed, but in a way that we enjoyed rather than making us resentful for wasting our time with the same dumb info we all heard a thousand times.

During the flight there was a female passenger going crazy across the aisle from me. At first we thought she was just loud and annoying, but after an hour or two she appeared drunk. The flight attendants began keeping a close eye on her, asking her to quiet down, if she could be appeased, etc., but to no avail. Over the course of the next hour the woman became completely unglued and began moving around the cabin, yelling, flailing her arms, etc.- I suspect she was medicated when she boarded, but the meds were wearing off. It was very alarming. The flight attendants physcally returned the woman to her seat and a different, very strong/athletic female attendant sat on the woman's lap for the rest of the flight to hold her in place, and the woman remained still. I thought it was above and beyond, but I was so glad they were able to contain the situation in a compassionate, effective manner. Note that they did not have a male sit on the passenger which might have been more traumatic and they didn't spray her with mace, bind her with zip ties, etc. Believe me, after she ran around the cabin I was willing to wrestle the woman to the ground, knock her out and tie her up with my belt! As soon as we landed security boarded the plan and finished dealing with the passenger.

Anyway the point of this all is that I wrote to the Prez of SWA and told him what happened and how glad I was to fly with such fun, competent people staffing the flight. He located the correct flight attendants and wrote them a letter commending them for their perrformance, copying me on the letter. I can only hope this helped them during raise/promotion time...I still remember those people all these years later.

Great story, thanks for posting it! With all the blog entries out there about lost luggage, delayed flights, raw sewage overflowing from a lavatory, it's nice to write up our good experiences on Southwest. Their flight attendants seem very well trained and motivated.

Thank You for your kind words about Southwest Airlines
Mr. T,

We LUV to hear from our Customers, whether good or bad. (Obviously, we prefer the good but know that we are not perfect!) We also have a personal commendation letter sent to every Employee mentioned in each letter from our President, Colleen Barrett. You have certainly stumped me as I have been searching for just exactly who the "Mr. T" is that was flying with us. I have been able to locate the flight attendants by the information you provided in the fax and am pretty certain which attendant assisted you with the sticky mess you encountered. I would LUV to have a copy of the Commendation to our Employee sent directly to you. If you would feel comfortable providing that information my SWA email is bill.mccain@wnco.com. But..I don't like to give up a good mystery and will continue to search our manifest to try and find the real "Mr. T"! Again, thank you for your kind comments about our flight attendants. We would LUV to see you back on our garish color schemed planes with our overly casually dressed flight attendants soon! Look for upcoming changes this fall - they just might surprise you.
